Forged by hand, one at a time

This is a wall hook I make myself at the anvil in my Cotswolds forge — not cast, not stamped, not bought in and relabelled. Pick the bar thickness and the length, and I forge it for you.

6mm is the lighter of the two and suits keys and other small things. 8mm is noticeably chunkier in the hand, if you want a bit more presence on the wall.

Each hook takes two screws, so once it is up it stays where you put it and will not pivot.

How it is made

Each one starts as a length of round bar. The first thing I forge is the small scroll at the very tip, then I work that back on itself to form the larger curve of the hook.

Next comes the twist down the stem. Last of all I forge a set-down at the top, flatten it, and drill the two screw holes.

That is many separate operations, every one of them done by hand at the anvil.

A note on sizes

Because these are forged rather than machined, the finished size can vary slightly from the length you choose. That is the nature of hand work, and it is why no two come out quite identical.

If you want something longer, or a size that is not listed, send me a message and I will make it to suit.

The finish

Finished with a hot wax of pure beeswax. It soaks into the warm steel and gives a deep, darkened colour, with brighter highlights where the hammer caught it.

The wax offers a little protection, but it is not a weatherproof coating — these are made for indoors.
