What to Expect on the Day

Ever wanted to try your hand at blacksmithing? Here’s your chance to dive into the world of fire, hammer, and steel in a fun, beginner-friendly experience.

We’ll start the day with a hot drink and a relaxed chat about health & safety. Then, it’s off to the forge to practice the techniques used by blacksmiths for centuries. At first you’ll practise on offcuts of steel just to learn a few basic techniques, then your first creation will be a classic: a forged hook. This will require several techniques, from drawing out a taper, to scrolling to twisting.

After we’ve forged a hook, we’ll move on to forge something else, often a poker as this lends itself well to group work.

Our small group size (maximum 4 participants) ensures you get plenty of one-on-one guidance from me. We’ll wrap up by 4:30 PM, but if you need a bit more time to complete your project, we’ll happily stay a little longer (within reason!)

Come get hands-on with this ancient craft, enjoy the day, and walk away with something handmade by YOU.

IMPORTANT BITS IN SUMMARY:

  • We start at 10:30am
  • Please bring a packed lunch
  • Wear natural fibres if possible (polyester can melt! Cotton is good, wool likely too warm!)
  • Leather aprons, googles and gloves will be provided
  • We aim to have fun forging things all day until we finish around 5pm, but I’m not too strict and we can stay till 6pm if needed to help you finish something.

(Note: Experience day vouchers can also be purchased at the Stroud Farmer’s Market Stall most Saturdays – these are redeemable for any experience day. Just turn up to buy one, or email me or text/whatsapp on 07951 761 421)

Blacksmithing Course FAQ

What Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) do you provide?
All PPE will be provided. Googles and leather aprons MUST be worn at all times in the workshop. Ear defenders are available when needed.
Do I need to bring my own PPE?
No, don’t worry. We provide all  PPE equipment.
What is the minimum age requirement for Blacksmithing experiences?
The minimum age for Blacksmithing experiences at Soulful Iron, is 11. That said, between years 11 and 18, we need an adult present. The adult can take part (if they pay for a session), or can just drink tea/coffee and watch if they prefer!
Do I have to be fit to do a Blacksmithing experience day?
Whilst you need to be able to hold tongs and swing a hammer, you don’t need to be super-fit. I’ve taught people from age 11 up to mid-late 70’s, and people so far have always left with something they’ve made!
What should I wear for my Blacksmithing experience day or course
Natural fibres! Avoid any polyester or other synthetic fibres, as they can MELT. So go for cotton, actual wool (not synthetic), and good, sturdy footwear. NO SANDLES OR OPEN SHOES (sorry, I shouldn’t even have to say that, but…)
Are there any restrictions on jewelry or hair in the forge?

No restrictions as such. But long hair must be tied back or tied up (for safety). Jewelry. We recommend removing all rings if possible (we use machinery).

Should I bring a packed lunch, or are food/drinks provided?.

Bring your own packed lunch (a fridge is available), but there’s unlimited tea & coffee in  the forge 🙂

Ready to Experience It Yourself?

Step into the forge, work with real fire and steel, and leave with something you made with your own hands.
